Top Locations for Your Next Summer Family Photo Session Near Tallahassee
Summer has a way of loosening everything up. The days stretch longer. The kids are barefoot more often than not. Hair gets a little windblown, dresses pick up a little sand, and somehow all of that feels exactly right.
Summer family sessions do not need to feel stiff or overly posed. Some of my favorite images happen when families are simply together. Walking near the water. Holding hands with salty air all around them. Letting little ones splash, explore, laugh, and be fully themselves.
That is one of the reasons I love coastal and water filled locations for summer family photography. Water brings movement. It brings play. It gives children something to do, which means less pressure on everyone. Instead of asking your child to stand still and smile, we let them run toward the shoreline, toss shells, dip their toes in, and snuggle up with mom and dad in between. The result is a gallery full of life, joy, and connection the kind of images that tell the truth about your family in this season.
If you are dreaming about a summer family session that feels natural, lighthearted, and full of the beauty of North Florida, here are three of my favorite locations to consider: St. Marks, Bald Point Beach, and Alligator Point Beach. Each one offers something a little different, but all three are wonderful choices for families who want a relaxed setting with water, movement, and room to breathe.
St. Marks
St. Marks is one of those places that never stops feeling special to me.
It has that mix of history, open sky, coastal beauty, and quiet that makes it such a lovely choice for family photos. The area around St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge and the lighthouse has a softness to it that photographs beautifully in summer. Water views, marsh grasses, wooden walkways, textured shorelines, and the iconic lighthouse in the distance — the whole setting feels simple and timeless.
From Tallahassee, St. Marks is about 20 miles and roughly a 29-minute drive. The refuge visitor center and administrative office are approximately 25 miles south of Tallahassee, with the route continuing along Lighthouse Road deeper into the refuge area. There is a $5 per car entrance fee, and the refuge is open during daylight hours with the gate on Lighthouse Road opening at 6 a.m.
What I love most about St. Marks for family photos is the variety. You get a coastal feel without needing a wide stretch of traditional white sand beach. The beauty here is quieter and more natural. It works especially well for families who love North Florida because it feels true to this area not overdone, not crowded, just peaceful, open, and meaningful.
For younger children, St. Marks can be especially sweet. There is so much to look at without the session needing to feel rushed. We can walk slowly. We can stop for cuddles. We can let your children point out birds, water, grasses, or boats in the distance. Those little pauses often become the moments you treasure most later. They are the in-between moments that tell the truth about your family right now.
What to wear: Soft summer tones work beautifully here. Creams, light blues, faded greens, sandy neutrals, and soft florals all pair well with the muted coastal palette. Barefoot works perfectly. Flowing dresses, linen, and cotton photograph especially beautifully in the breeze.
Best for: Families who love a more organic coastal setting, want a little history and texture in their gallery, and are drawn to a session that feels both elegant and relaxed.
Bald Point Beach
If you want a true summer feel with beach access, open shoreline, and room for your children to move, Bald Point is such a fun option.
Bald Point State Park is one of the most picturesque coastal areas along North Florida's Gulf Coast, offering a beautiful mix of beach, dunes, and natural scenery that makes family sessions feel easy and joyful. The park is located at 146 Box Cut Road in Alligator Point and is open from 8 a.m. until sundown, 365 days a year. The current fee is $4 per vehicle for up to eight people, or $2 for pedestrians and bicyclists. From Tallahassee, the drive is roughly 48 to 49 miles through Medart, about an hour.
What makes Bald Point so wonderful for family photography is that it gives you that beach session feeling without having to travel too far. For Tallahassee families, that matters. When you are planning around naps, sunscreen, snacks, and bedtime, a location that feels beautiful and manageable is such a gift.
Because it is a state park, access feels straightforward, parking is easier to navigate, and the setting is a little more predictable for families. That can make session day smoother from the very beginning. You arrive, unload, take a deep breath, and just enjoy being there together.
Photographically, Bald Point offers lovely versatility. We can capture wide shoreline images with the sky opening up around your family, close snuggly moments near the dunes, and playful movement by the water. It is a fantastic location for children who want to run. It is also wonderful for parents who want a mix of images in your private gallery.
This is one of my favorite locations for sessions that feel playful and light. Summer at the beach naturally brings a sense of freedom, and children settle into that so quickly. They splash, twirl, and collect treasures. Parents relax because their children are doing what children do best. That is when the magic shows up not in perfection, but in presence.
What to wear: Light neutrals with one or two soft accent colors. Think soft blue, sea glass, blush, butter yellow, or a muted stripe. Bare feet are perfect. Dresses with movement are always beautiful. For dads and boys, rolled sleeves and lighter textures photograph so well against the coastal backdrop.
Best for: Families who want a beach setting that is easy to access, naturally beautiful, and full of that carefree summer energy.
Alligator Point Beach
Alligator Point Beach is such a gem for families who want a quieter coastal session.
It feels laid back and tucked away, with beautiful white sand, gentle Gulf views, and a more natural, less commercial beach experience. From Tallahassee, the drive is approximately 43 to 45 miles, about one hour.
Unlike Bald Point, Alligator Point Beach is not a single park entrance experience. Public access is more limited, with only a few access areas offering minimal parking and no public facilities. Legal parking is available only in marked "beach access parking" spaces, and these rules are actively enforced. This location is beautiful but does require a little more planning ahead.
What makes Alligator Point so special for family sessions is the feeling. It has a softness and quiet that can be hard to find. If you are hoping for images that feel a little more secluded and natural, this is such a lovely place. The beach itself becomes the backdrop, but not in a loud way. It simply lets your family shine.
This is a beautiful choice for families who want more candid storytelling in their gallery. The shoreline gives children the freedom to explore. Parents can walk hand in hand with little ones between them. Older kids can race the waves. Siblings can gather shells and laugh together without it feeling forced. The session becomes less about performing for the camera and more about simply being together in a beautiful place.
Because facilities are limited, I usually recommend Alligator Point for families who are comfortable with a slightly more natural and unstructured beach setting. Bringing water, wipes, towels, and a few easy snacks is always a smart idea. But if that kind of relaxed adventure sounds like your family, the reward is absolutely worth it.
What to wear: Lean a little beachy and effortless. Soft whites, sandy beige, pale blue, dusty rose, sage, or even a subtle coastal print all work beautifully. Because the setting is simple, your connection becomes the focus — and that is always my favorite part.
Best for: Families who want a quiet beach, a more tucked-away feel, and a session that leans heavily into genuine movement and connection.
Which Location Is Right for Your Family?
The truth is, there is not one perfect location for every family. The right place is the one that fits your people. If you love history, marsh views, and a softer coastal setting St. Marks may be the perfect fit.
If you want easy beach access, park-style parking, and room for little ones to play Bald Point may be exactly what you are looking for.
If you are drawn to a quieter beach with a tucked-away feel and a more natural rhythm Alligator Point may be the one.
What all three locations have in common is the way they allow families to relax. Water has a way of doing that. It gives children freedom. It gives parents permission to let go a little. It brings motion, texture, and joy into a gallery in the most natural way. Summer family sessions near the water are not about everything being perfectly in place. They are about capturing your family just as you are in this season sun-kissed, sandy, connected, joyful, and fully alive.
That is always the goal for me. Not simply to photograph what your family looks like, but to preserve what it feels like to be together right now.
And summer, with all of its warmth and movement and beauty, is such a lovely time to do exactly that.
